About Bethany...

Hello! My name is Bethany Hanusch and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in San Marcos, Texas.

I work with individuals 18+ and I truly LOVE the community of San Marcos, Tx. I have lived in the area for 17 years and have loved the opportunity to meet with a variety of people in all stages of life.

Interests & areas of Focus

I see 18+ only. I work with adults of all ages and life circumstances. Most people come to me looking to connect some dots or disrupt patterns they have noticed. It is my joy to be able to help people see their core selves with compassion and understanding rather than resistance and judgment.

I also work with college students who are working through all the things you would expect to work through in your late teens and early twenties! Anxiety, life transitions, depression, processing childhood trauma, processing your family history and how it impacts you, relationship issues among partners and friends- the list goes on! Your 20s are a time for reflecting back on experiences, growing self awareness, & then looking ahead .

The clients I work with are already a bit introspective and often wish to work in the mental health profession themselves. They are ready to do the work of processing their feelings, thoughts, & behaviors and are seeking skills to help live a more full, healthy life. If that’s you- we would be a great fit!

Personal Details

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband of 14 years, Levi, our 4 year old son, and our three pets. Before I began graduate school for counseling I was a wedding photographer for 5 years which gave me a lot of experience with anxiety and stress! In my downtime I enjoy scary movies, gardening, embroidery, reality tv, and love traveling and hiking.

Approach to Counseling

In the counseling room I utilize several therapy modalities, including Self Compassion Focus, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Biblical Counseling, and sprinklings of IFS and DBT. What this means is that I focus on your perception and thoughts that you have in response to events that have happened in your life. The events are not always the most important thing to focus on, it is what you believe about the event that matters. We are all interpreters and sometimes we aren't very good ones so we need to challenge our thoughts and beliefs! Being able to offer our past and current selves compassion rather than judgment is where healing and change can truly begin.

Additionally, I offer biblical counseling. I have received training from the Austin Stone Institute on the practice of biblical counseling and my masters program was also based on biblical foundations. I believe much of our struggles in life come from questions surrounding who God is and what that means for our life. However, I understand that not everyone is looking for biblical counseling and I am happy to provide services without this component.

Education

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling. Included in this education are 800 hours of internship training. I have received additional training in theology and biblical counseling from the Austin Stone Institute as well as training in EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing) through Rick Levinson’s program.
